Spiez Castle: A Timeless Jewel on Lake Thun

With its origins dating back over a thousand years, this castle isn’t just a relic of the past—it’s a living testament to the region’s cultural and architectural evolution.

Upon my arrival in Switzerland and settling into my accommodation in Spiez, I was captivated by the view to Spiez castle and the stunning panorama of Lake Thun from the balcony. That afternoon, I chose to stroll down the hill to visit the historic castle.

The Spiez Castle enjoys one of the most enviable locations in Switzerland. Perched above the turquoise waters of Lake Thun, the castle offers panoramic views that stretch from the rolling vineyards below to the snow-capped Alps in the distance. The Spiez castle was strategically located at a crucial site for controlling and monitoring the important trade routes on Lake Thun.

The castle was first mentioned in historical records around 933 AD, making it one of the oldest in the country. It began as a fortified tower built by the Kingdom of Burgundy.

Medieval Expansion: Over the centuries, Spiez Castle was expanded and transformed by various noble families, most notably the von Bubenberg and von Erlach families. Each left their mark, adding Gothic and Baroque elements to the structure. The castle complex includes a Romanesque chapel with stunning frescoes, a medieval keep, and beautifully preserved living quarters that showcase furniture and artifacts from different eras

The castle has undergone numerous renovations and expansions throughout the centuries, reflecting a variety of architectural styles. These transformations showcase the evolving tastes and needs of different eras in history.

I found the castle grounds are a delight in themselves. When strolling through the manicured gardens, I could imagine enjoying a picnic with lake views, also exploring the nearby vineyards that produce local wines.

Spiez is known for its wine culture, and a visit to the castle pairs perfectly with a tasting of the region’s crisp whites and fruity reds.

Spiez is easily accessible by train from major Swiss cities like Bern and Interlaken. The castle is a short walk from the station, making it a perfect day trip or a scenic stop on a longer journey through the Bernese Oberland.

I sat down at the Lake Thun boat ramp. It was to late for a boat ride, but I guessed a journey by boat on Lake Thun would give a unique perspective of the breathtaking landscape that surrounds the Spiez castle.

The views down to the Lake Thun and the Spiez castle was a truly scenic and enjoyable experience. There were breathtaking views of sparkling blue water, majestic mountains, and charming villages that dot the landscape of Switzerland.
