Cologne under Roman Empire 200 a.D, Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium

Cologne was a thriving Roman city 2000 years ago

I like to explore history, including the Roman Empire and their expansion thousands of years ago in Germany. While doing research, I discovered there were two big Roman settlements, one in Trier, and further north at the Rhine, the city of Cologne. You can still find some remnants of stone houses, roads and gates that have stood there 2000 years ago. Continue reading Cologne was a thriving Roman city 2000 years ago

Linderhof Palace, Bavaria

The Linderhof Palace of King Ludwig ll

The Linderhof Palace follows the “Pleasure Palace” type, which originated in France in the 18th century and was soon built in palace gardens across Europe. The splendid furnishings are a mixture of the French, but also the Bavarian Rococo. This Palace, which resulted from a long period of construction and renovation, is the only larger castle King Ludwig II experienced complete while still alive. Besides this precarious building, I visited the Ulm Cathedral that has the highest church tower in world Continue reading A Crooked or “Schiefes Haus” in Ulm

On the Königsallee in Düsseldorf, for example, the “Halsbandsittich” or Rose-Ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) has now become a part of everyday life. “Osterbrunnen”, the decorated Easter Fountains in Franconia

Decorating an “Osterbrunnen” is a German tradition of sprucing up public fountains with garlands and painted eggs for Easter. It began in the early 20th century in the Upper Franconia (Fränkische Schweiz) but also has spread to other regions. The decoration is usually kept from Good Friday until two weeks after Easter Continue reading “Osterbrunnen”, the decorated Easter Fountains in Franconia
